Difference to Last Years Project

This years project is to film a music video for an unsigned bands song. This is very different to the AS Level project as then we filmed the opening to a thriller. This year I also worked on my own whereas last year I worked as part of a group. This meant that the sole ideas and direction of the project would be my own. This is very different to last year as part of a group we were all able to contribute numerous ideas to the project.

Shot List

This post will be explaining the shots that will be used in my music video and how they will be portrayed to the audience. This will also be shown through a storyboard which will be developed into an anamatic. This helps to show and develop my ideas as it displays the music video in a different way.

1. The first shot will be a close up of the guitar being held by the guitarist of the band. This will be and extreme close up and show the start of the song as he begins to play the guitar.

2. The second shot again shows the main guitarist with the focus again on the guitar however this shot will not be as zoomed in and will just be a medium close up. This will interlink with the previous shot as it will zoom out from this.

3. The lead singer is then shown and the rest of the band is also seen in the background this is just a medium shot with the main singer the focus. A close up is again used for this as he is tapping his foot to the beat of the song.

4. The drummer is then shown as the drums are introduced in the song with a close up used. This is when he begins to play the drums lightly with the shot looking straight at the drums. This shot will slowly zoom out before moving on to the next shot.

5. The next shot again shows of close up of a guitar as the sound of the guitar is laying with the focus on the guitar in not only the shot but also in the music.

6. This is then zoomed out to show all three members of the band with the use of a medium shot as the introduction of the song is playing. They are again playing to the beat of the song.

7. The next shot is when the lyrics come into the song as a close up of a man waking up in bed is shown. When he is awake he then sits up to move onto the next shot.

8. He then looks at the clock with an over the shoulder shot used as he is sat up in his bed. As he looks at the clock an extreme close up of the clock is used zooming in from the shot.

9. There is a fade as a medium shot is then used which shows him standing in his room as he has just gotten dressed and is ready to go.

10. The next shot then shows a long shot as the man is walking out of the front door. This shot is taken from a backward view.

11. There is then the previous shot but  this shot is taken from outside the door showing the person walking out the door with again a long shot used.

12. A long shot is then used to show him walking down the street this shot is taken from behind. The camera is gradually zooming in toward him during the shot.

13. This shot is then shown again but this time is shown from the front. This shows him coming towards the camera with a close up used as he approaches the camera.

14. There is then a shot taken from across the road as he is walking with the camera moving with him making this a tracking shot.

15. The shot then switches to a point of view shot which shows him walking as he gets to the end of the street and turns the corner with the camera showing this from before and after he turns the corner.

16. The next shot instigates the start of the chorus therefore switches to a close up of the lead singer lip syncing.

17. The next shot then shows a close up of the drums being played. The shot then zooms out from this to get a medium shot of the drums.

18. The next shot shows the whole of the band during the chorus as the lead singer is again lip syncing. A close up of the the lead singer lip syncing is then shown.

19. Following from the previous shot of the whole band the camera then zooms in for an extreme close up of the lead sing still lip syncing as the chorus comes to an end.

20. There is then a brief guitar solo which in this shot shows the whole band with a medium shot used. This interchanges from the shot of the whole band to a shot of the guitarist.

21. The camera then zooms in to the guitarist to show a close up of the guitar. This is a shot that is used a number of times during the guitar solo. However the shot is used from a range of distances.

22. As the next verse begins the main actor is again shown walking however he is coming towards the camera and the background behind him is gradually becoming darker. This indicates that he has been walking all day and is seen as having no direction.

23. The next shot then follows the previous shot as he is walking in the dark and this shows a number of fast shots of this from various angles.

24. There is then a number of shots which switch from the previous shot of the actor walking to then show the band as the verse comes to an end and the chorus begins. This will include a wide varirty of camera angles and movements.

25. The different shots will be shown throughout as the chorus is repeated at the end of the song with fast paced editing used with a range of band shots to show them playing and lip syncing.

26. The song then comes to an end with the song gradually slowing as the lyrics stop to show the actor as he ends up back at his house where the video began.

Magazine Poster Analysis

In this project as well as creating the music video we must also create a poster advertisement for a magazine showing our band. I will be analysing a number of front covers and then posters from a range of magazines such as NME, Kerrang and Q.

The image above shows the front cover of an issue of NME which shows the main image of The Killers which will immediately attract the audience and the the main headline also does this. The title NME is clearly displayed in the top left hand corner in bold capitals and clearly stands out to the audience and grabs there attention. The magazine then shows a number of band names next to the title to make the reader aware of some of the content available in the magazine. The use of the skyline and the cover line also helps the magazine to display additional content in the magazine. NME use this effective layout for each of their issues as it provides consistency and clearly helps people to identify the magazine when they see it. The colours used on the front cover range but are used effectively with the background and this allows them to be clearly visible to the reader as a number of bold colours are used.

The image above shows the front cover of Kerrang which in its design is very similar to the front cover of NME. It again has a main attraction with a picture of a popular band which in this case is the Foo Fighters. The majority of the magazines title is hidden behind the image which, in my opinion is not an effective feature. The use of small headlines is then well used as they are clearly displayed through the use of bright colours such as red and yellow which instantly appeal to the audience. The skyline and coverline like in NME are used very effectively as this again clearly displays the name if numerous bands to attract the reader to the magazine. These also clearly display the main contents of the magazine as well as the items that come with it.

The magazine cover of Q is shown above and is very similar to both NME and Kerrang as the main image is again of a leading band to attract the audience with the use of bold and appealing headlines. The use of red headlines appears to be a common feature among these magazines and appealing to the intended audience. The title of the magazine is clearly shown in the top left corner and they use the tag-line of " The UK's biggest music magazine ". this shows the audience the popularity of the magazine and creates a sense of loyalty to the customer as they become aware this is a popular and successful magazine.

Album Covers

This post will show a number of album covers from a range of artists that link to my artist and music video.

The first image shown below is the album cover of the Kooks 'Inside In Inside Out'. This is a very basic design but is very effective. The cover shows the band with their instruments which could indicate they are performing or getting ready to perform. This is shown on a plain white background without anything spectacular on the cover. This means that all of the focus is on the band which is a very effective technique which i may use for my album cover.

The next album cover which is shown below is the Kings of Leon album 'Only by the Night'. This design is very unusual and unlike the Kooks it is not a simple and plain cover. The cover is split into four sections to show a part of the face of each of the four band members. However this also is integrated with what seems to be an owl to fit with the title 'Only by the Night'. It is highly unlikely that I will be using this sort of design and mine will show the band members but with a basic yet professional outlook upon them.

The next album cover shown below is of the killers album 'Day & Age'. The album cover for this is an unusual abstract design but again clearly displays the title of the album and the name of the band. The background has a range of colours with the bottom half showing bright colours such as yellow and orange with it getting darker and it appearing to be in the moonlight with darker colours used such as purple and black with stars also shown around the moon.

Target Audience

As mentioned in the band research the target audience for my video as well as the digipack and magazine article will be students to young adults both male and female. However i believe that the majority of the audience would be males due to the music and the way it is presented through the bands image. I will appeal to this target audience through the way that the video will be filmed and the range of extravagent camera angles/shots as well as the way the band will be presented e.g actions and clothing etc. I think that this sort of media is majorly consumed on the interent with people either downloading music online or watching the music video on YouTube. However a large group of music enthuisiasts still but the CD which is the reason why i will also be creating the digipack which would be for the CD to appeal to the target audience. Another aspect of this will be the magazine article which in the modern day is a very effecive way of introducing and advertising a band or artist and encourageing a consumer to buy the CD or view/download online.

Initial Ideas

When planning my ideas for this project i had a number of initial ideas with some not being at all and others featuring heavily in my video. This post will portray some of these ideas and explain either why they were used or why they were rejected.

Throughout the planning of my music video I have stuck to the idea of numerous shots of the band playing the song in a room on their own performing. This will include a range of camera shots and angles with lip syncing also used on numerous occasions. This will be of the drummer, guitarist and of course the lead singer of the band.

I was the planning the ideas to go along side these shots of the band that would tie in as the narrative. The main narrative which I decided upon using was the protagonist walking or wandering to tie in with the name of the song and to show that the protagonist is lonely.

The Killers- When you were young

The video begins with an introduction that does not contain sound. The actual music for the video does not begin for around a minute and a half. This is not a common feature of music videos today but the video portrays this introduction very effectively. The video is set in Brazil and during the introduction we see a man looking for a woman who is seen as his wife. It also appears that she is very ill as he finds her and holds her in his arms.

When the music does begin we instantly see a closeup of the bands lead singer which is a very common feature in music videos particularly of this genre as it creates a star attraction. This then quickly changes to see some candles and then this is rapidly followed by a shot of a woman praying in a church with rosary beads in her hands.Whilst the we see the woman praying in the church the shots are quickly changed from this to shots of the band playing the guitar and tapping to the beat. The majority of these shots are closeups of the band.

Once the woman comes out of the church a long shot is used to show this and she seems relaxed now and relieved. This again changes to closeups of the band however this now involves seeing the drums played but the main focus s on the lead singer who is lip syncing which again creates a star attraction as well as seeing his emotion due to the closeup used. We then see the woman walking in her husband whilst he is kissing another woman as she runs out and a tracking shot is used as she runs down the road. A number of closeups are also used which show her emotion as she is distraught which is contrasting to previous shot when she came out of the church as she and her husband were laughing and joking together.

Then the shots go to the bar where the man works and this shows that the band is performing there and it shows the two contrasting scenes of the band playing as a number of closeups are used. This is compared with the shots of the man and women  as shot reverse shot is used to show them having a conversation as they appear to be resolving their issues. The end of the video shows the woman walking out of the bar with the man after she was watching the band perform as a point of view shot was used. the final shot goes back to the introduction with a long shot of the man holding the woman in his arms on the top of a cliff looking over the city.

Band Contact

The screenshot below shows me contacting the band to ask their permission to use their song to create a music video for it. This also requires me making a digi-pack for their song and the band which is why we must ask the band if this was okay to use their song.

Genre Research (Indie Rock)

The genre of this band and their song which i will be using is indie rock. I will be researching the the genre so that i can intergrate into my music video.

Indie rock is a genre that originated in the United Kingdom and United States in the 1980s. Indie rock is a diverse genre with a variety of sub genres within this such as Post rock, Indie pop and Noise rock. the term was originally associated with the record labels recording the music and then was used interchangeably as alternative rock. The main instruments which are used within the music of this genre are Guitar, Bass, Drums and Keyboard. these instruments are often shown within the music video of indie rock genre as it clearly targets the audience and demonstrates the genre effectively.

Indie rock, derived from "independent", describes the small and relatively low budget labels on which it is released and the do-it-yourself attitude of the bands and artists involved. Although distribution deals are often struck with major corporate companies these labels and the bands they host have attempted to retain their autonomy, leaving them free to explore sounds, emotions and subjects of limited appeal to large, mainstream audiences. The main target audience of this genre of music is generally young people both make and female which is evident through the sound of the music, the image of the band and their music videos. This is also relevant to my music video as i will be targeting this audience and this again will be demonstrated throughout the project.

When the term indie was first used in mid 1980s to describe the music produced on post-punk labels rather than the actual labels themselves. After the introduction of indie a number of bands/artists would label themselves in the indie genre. Indie music is a fast growing genre in today's society and a very popular choice of music as there are many ways it can be approached. The genre of indie rock contains a diverse range of links within other genres. This is what a high amount of upcoming unsigned artists base themselves and their music around. As the genre has developed over the years, since its introduction a number of characteristics have been added and developed for the better of the genre. This has lead to there being numerous sub-genres within indie music which is why it has become so popular.

Song Lyrics

Midnight Wanderer by the Silent Sundays

(Line Number)
Gets out of bed and looks at the clock (1)
sees the time
is the tick and the tock
he was just in time
set off walking before the chime

That lonely midnight wanderer (6)
sets off walking in search for an answer
he lost everything from home to business
that lonely midnight wanderer

He used to lead a perfect life (10)
 nice house, great kids
but a bitch for a wife
she left him for an italian fling
left him on the streets without a thing

That lonely midnight wanderer (15)
sets off walking in search for an answer
he lost everything from home to business
that lonely midnight wanderer
 (x2)

Band Research

They are a Sheffield band named Silent Sundays. The band formed in mid 2006 after trying many different line-ups until they found a comfortable line-up and an always positive atmosphere.
They are a 4-Piece band, and have a wide variety in the styles of music that they play. They play a mixture of covers and originals which range between punk, rock and indie.
With a Lead guitarist and Drummer into some of the more heavier genres, our music includes fast solos, fast rhythms, Strong and rhythmic drumming and some awesome fills. Also on the lighter side, the band has a bassist and rhythm guitarist into lighter, more indie style music, giving songs a nice melodic feeling with some chords new to the guitaring world, fast chord changes, funky bass riffs and clever chord structures. With Dave as the lead vocalist and Tray and Tom as back-up vocalists, their vocal range is almost endless, so they like to include clever and melodic vocal parts, with some strong vocal parts for all 3 of the vocalists in the band.

The bands target audience is generally from students to young adults and can be both for a male and female audience. When hearing the bands music this is very evident as well as when you see the band and the image they portray. This is due to the band being of a young age and the distinctive style they have adopted which is shown throughout their music. I will be sticking to this target audience when creating my music video for one of their songs as well as the added pieces such as the digipack and the magazine article. This will be done by using a young range of people to act as the band during the video and to keep a basic yet proffesional, light hearted theme throughout.

Kings of Leon - Use Somebody

The music video for the Kings of Leon, Use somebody is a typical conventional rock video which contains many camera shots and angles in my music video. This below will explain a range of different shots which i may use in my video.

The close up of the bands lead singer lip syncing is a dominant shot in the video and is used with a green filter which keeps the shot basic but also displays the emotion of the singer. This shot juxtaposes with previous shots in the video which show the chaotic city at night as it makes the video more serious as well as creating a star attraction. I will be using this shot in my music video however unlike this video it will not be one of the dominant shots used.

The point of view shot shows the motorway which presents the typical chaotic atmosphere evident in the majority of rock music videos. This is due to the bright lights used as well as the scene being sped up which again makes the scene seem more chaotic and is used to reflect their lifestyle. It is unlikely that i will use a shot like this as it would be very difficult to capture this type of shot. Also because this video is traditional rock whereas my video will be combining rock with indie this shot could be unsuitable to the video.

The use of the long shot shows the band in concert but also lets you see the audience which is also a typical feature in rock music videos when combined with the closeups of the band in concert. The frantic and chaotic scenes again  reflect the bands lifestyle as well as the upbeat scenes reflecting the nature of not only the band but the song and the fans. This can be a very effective shot in music videos which i am going to attempt to include in my video, however,  this will probably be more closeups of the band rather than shots of an audience.

Goodwins's six points

Andrew Goodwin's media theory contains six major points which explain the basics of what a music video must contain and how this is portrayed with the music. The six points are:

  • There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
  • There is a relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
  • Goodwin also states that the music video should not only be constructed by the visuals and the song nut should also represent the artist which may include their sound as well as their image.
  • Relationships are strongly built throughout the video with a number of closeups of the artist to give them the representation and publicity they require. This also lets the audience see the emotion of the lead artist as well as creating a star attraction.
  • Voyeurism is a major feature in a number of music videos today and is used to increase the videos attractiveness. This is in particular to males, whilst in humorous videos inter-textuality is often employed.
  • A number of inter-textual references is also essential, either to other music videos or to texts of film and TV. These then provide further gratification to the viewers or audience.

Genre Research (Rock)

My video will be in the Indie Rock genre so therefore a number of these types of elements may be included in my video and how i present the band.

There are many elements in a rock music video which make it what it is. A rock music video is usually a lot different to other genres due to the fast paced editing used. However, when the rock genre is combined with another genre there are a range of elements which are put together to make a music video. These shots that are put together will juxtapose each other to create the effect of an upbeat, pacey but serious and effective approach to the video.
The main components of a rock music include:

  • The band in concert (showing the band and the audience)
  • Close up of the instruments (Guitars, drums, microphone etc)
  • Close ups of the lead singer
  • Fast paced editing (editing is always to the beat of the music)
  • There is not usually a narrative
  • Shots of the band backstage
  • Showing male lifestyle
The mise en scene is also a key element when defining a rock music video. This includes:

  • Clothing/appearance  ( jeans, vests, dark colours e.g black and grey)
  • Lighting ( green filter which shows emotions, dark lighting to reflect the night time, monochrome)

Possible Artists

When I was searching for an artist I chose a number number of songs which I might use. I shortlisted this down to three songs which I thought I could create a successful video for and would be the most suitable. I will be explaining below why I chose which song I did for the video and the reasons of why I rejected the others . This will include not only the song itself but the genre as well as the style and image that the band and song create and how I can portray this with my video.

  • Silent Sundays
  • The 99s
  • The Colours

After reviewing each band and their music I decided to use the Silent Sundays song midnight wanderer. This was because I did not only prefer the song itself and the sound of the band. Their image and target audience was also the most relevant for the image that I wanted my music video to have therefore I chose this over the others as they could not offer this. The bands that I looked at were all of the indie rock genre and I decided to use the silent sundays as their music was more appealing to me and I felt that I could portray their sound and image well to the audience.

Brief

This post is the brief and explains what is required in this project.

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with the following:

  • A digipak for the album's release
  • A magazine advertisement for the digipak

Welcome

My name is Connor Ball and I am currently studying media as one of my A-levels at Christ the king sixth form. This blog is for my A2 media blog this year which will record every step of my project which is too create a music video and digipak for a song of an unsigned band. The stages of this project include the planning, the research, the construction and then the evaluation of all of my project at the end of it all.
